Mangal Bhat Puja at Mangalnath Mandir, Ujjain, with Ganpati Pujan and a rice offering to the Shiv Linga.
Tradition regards Mangalnath Mandir in Ujjain as the birthplace of the planet Mars (Mangal). Astrology calls a person Manglik when Mars falls in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house of the birth chart. Such a person is said to meet shortages and other troubles, and tradition holds that a Manglik marries another Manglik. Mangal Bhat Puja is performed here to ease the effects of Mangal Dosha and to pray for a marriage at the right time and a settled life. The puja is done by pandits using Vedic rites. It includes Ganpati Pujan and an offering of rice (चावल) to the Shiv Linga. One Brahmin is needed. Black and green clothes should not be worn during the puja. As this ritual is held at Mangalnath, devotees believe it brings peace and happiness. Many say it eases delays in marriage and career, money worries and relationship issues. Every year thousands visit the temple for it.
