Tirth Shradh In Varanasi

About this puja

Ancestral rites with pind daan and tarpan at Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga.

Tirth Shradh honours the souls of the Pitru (ancestors) at a holy pilgrimage place, not at home. Places such as Gaya, Haridwar, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Rameshwaram are said to give greater spiritual merit and bring peace and moksha to the departed. Varanasi is called Moksha Dayini, the city that grants liberation, and rites here are believed to reach ancestors directly. This Tirth Shradh is held at Dashashwamedh Ghat, the best known and most accessible ghat, near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It suits annual Shradh and general Tarpana. The devotee first takes a holy bath and a Sankalp in their name. Pinds are offered on a leaf while the priest chants Vedic mantras to invite the ancestors. Water mixed with sesame seeds is poured over the thumb, and the offerings are gently immersed in the river. Food is offered to a crow, cow, ants and dogs to end the rites.

Why devotees perform it

Devotees believe it helps departed souls find eternal peace and be freed from rebirth. It is said to wash away karmic debts handed down the family line. Honouring ancestors at this Maha-Tirth is believed to bring blessings and harmony to the living family.
