Varanasi Air Show at Namo Ghat on 25 October: What's Confirmed

The Indian Air Force will hold an aerial display over the Ganga at Namo Ghat in Varanasi on Sunday 25 October 2026. The defence ministry confirmed the date on 21 September. Almost everything else you may have read — the timings, the aircraft, the boat closures — has so far only been reported, not announced. What is confirmed about the Varanasi air show

What has only been reported

Other outlets have published much more detail, mostly from planning meetings between the Air Force and the district. Swarajya, summarising several Hindi-language reports on 20 September, described:

• Three days of flying, on 22, 23 and 25 October, with rehearsals from 20 October.
• Performances between noon and 2 PM, lasting around 90 minutes.
• More than three dozen aircraft, including Rafale and Tejas fighters, the Suryakiran aerobatic team, Rudra helicopters, a C-295 and a Dakota.
• Namo Ghat handed over to the Air Force from 16 October, with public access restricted during setup.
• The Rajghat bridge and boat services on the Ganga closed during performances.
• Crowds expected on the scale of Dev Deepawali, with the Prime Minister likely to attend on the final day.

These may well turn out to be accurate. But the date itself has already moved once: in June, The Tribune reported that the display would be held on Air Force Day, 8 October. The confirmed date is now 25 October. Plans for an event this size change, which is exactly why the Air Force has asked people to wait.

Namo Ghat: where the display will be

Namo Ghat is one of the newest ghats in Kashi, at the northern end of the riverfront. The Varanasi district's official portal describes it as a modern ghat spread over 21,000 square metres, with a viewing deck, a cafeteria and a parking area; the foundation stone was laid in 2018. That open space and parking are a large part of why it suits an event like this, where the older ghats further south are narrow, stepped and packed with shrines.

If the display is visible along the river as reported, spectators will spread well beyond Namo Ghat itself. The ghats of the old city — Dashashwamedh, Manikarnika, Assi — are where pilgrims already are on any given day, which is why this event matters to people who have come for darshan, not for the air show.

Why Central Air Command is marking this in Kashi

The defence ministry framed the display as a celebration of Central Air Command's six decades. According to the ministry's statement, as reported by The Times of India, the Command's history includes the wars of 1965 and 1971, Operation Cactus in the Maldives, and Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil conflict, along with flood relief, evacuation and humanitarian missions across a large and difficult region.

Holding it in Varanasi, against the Ganga, is a deliberate choice: the ministry spoke of a backdrop of "immense cultural and national significance." In recent years the IAF has taken its big public displays out to cities across the country; Varanasi now joins that list.

25 October is also Sharad Purnima

This matters more for pilgrims than any aircraft list. 2. Spectators coming in for the air show, including from neighbouring districts.
3. Sunday visitors from the city itself.
