Bhasma Aarti is the reason many families go to Ujjain at all — and the reason many of them arrive at 3:00 AM without a permit. The booking itself is not complicated. It is just early, strict, and surrounded by websites that are not the temple. This guide walks through the official process, in order.

What Bhasma Aarti is

Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the only one where the deity is worshipped in the Dakshinamurti form, facing south. Bhasma Aarti is its first ritual of the day, performed in the early hours while the city is still dark. Devotees describe it as the most intense darshan in the country, and the temple treats it accordingly: limited, booked, and tightly managed.

That is the whole reason this page exists. Everything else in Ujjain you can decide on the morning. Bhasma Aarti booking, you decide weeks earlier.

Bhasma Aarti booking: the official process

Booking runs through the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee's own website. The Bhasma Aarti booking page sits under the site's Services section, alongside Sheeghra Darshan, Sandhya Aarti, Shayan Aarti, donations, Atithi Niwas rooms and pujan bookings.

The steps, in the order the site asks for them:

1. Log in with your mobile number and the OTP sent to it.
2. Choose the date. Availability is shown for that date only.
3. Add each devotee with name and an ID proof type and number — Aadhaar and passport are both accepted.
4. Complete the booking and save the permit it issues.
5. Carry the permit and the same ID you booked with, on the day.

When booking opens, and what Tatkal means

This is the part most families get wrong, and it is the only part that really decides whether you get in.

So if your family is planning a Mahakal yatra in the last week of December, the date you actually need in your calendar is 1 December, 8:00 AM — not the travel date. Set an alarm, be logged in before the hour, and have every devotee's ID number typed out and ready to paste.

Tatkal is the safety net, not the plan. It opens at 8:00 AM the day before, which is usually while you are already travelling.

The temple does not publish how many permits are released per day, and it does not publish the fee on any public page — the amount appears once you are logged in and choosing a slot. We are not going to guess at either number here.

Timings for the whole day

The temple publishes two seasonal schedules. Bhasma Aarti is at the same hour in both; the other aartis shift by thirty to forty-five minutes.

Those times come from the temple's own timing page. If you are travelling in October or March, check which column applies to your dates rather than assuming.

On dress, the temple's own site does not publish a code. Madhya Pradesh Tourism states that men should wear a dhoti and women a saree if they wish to offer prayers at the inner sanctum, and that mobiles and cameras are not allowed inside the premises, with lockers provided. Where you read stricter or more colourful rules elsewhere — and there are many circulating about who may watch which moment of the ritual — the temple has not published them, and neither will we.

If the Bhasma Aarti slot is gone

It happens, especially in Sawan and around Mahashivratri. You still have a good morning ahead of you:

• Sheeghra Darshan is the temple's own official quick-darshan pass, described on its site as a way to have darshan without waiting in the long queue. It is booked through the same Services section.
• Ordinary darshan after 6:00 AM, once the Bhasma Aarti crowd has cleared, is calmer than most people expect.
• Sandhya Aarti in the evening is bookable from 12:00 noon that day, first come, first served.

None of these are Bhasma Aarti, and it is worth saying so plainly to whoever in the family was hoping for it. But a 7:00 AM darshan with unhurried time in front of the Jyotirlinga is a better memory than two hours of arguing with someone at a gate.

How to spot a site that is not the temple

Search for "bhasma aarti booking" and you will get several confident-looking sites that are not the temple. Use these checks:

• The domain. The official site is shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. The older address shrimahakaleshwar.com now redirects there; if a page does not end up on the .mp.gov.in domain, it is not the temple.
• The login. The real booking starts with your mobile number and an OTP, on the temple's site.
• The promise. The temple does not guarantee permits, does not sell "VIP Bhasma Aarti", and does not need a middleman.
• The contact. Genuine help comes from 1800 233 1008, not from a WhatsApp number that messaged you first.

Mahakal Mahalok, and how long Ujjain really takes

The corridor most visitors now walk before darshan is Mahakal Mahalok: a 910-metre stretch built at a cost of around Rs 351 crore, with 108 carved pillars, 76 sculptures and 52 murals from the Shiva Purana, running beside Rudrasagar Lake. There is a water-screen and fountain show daily at 8:00 PM.

Going with parents who cannot queue at 3 AM

A 4:00 AM aarti means leaving your stay by about 2:45 AM, walking a fair distance, depositing phones in a locker and standing in a managed queue in the dark. For a couple in their seventies, on their first visit, that is a lot — and it is the hour when touts work hardest, because everyone is tired and nobody can look anything up on a phone they have just locked away.
