Overview
Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple is among the oldest and most distinctive temples of Vrindavan, close to Vamshivat in Uttar Pradesh. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as the Gopeshwar lingam, also called Gopi. The temple is also known as Gopishwar Mahadev. Devotees who long to experience the joys of the Raas Leela come here to pray to Gopeshwar. They ask to be granted Sakhibhav, the attitude of a gopi. Vrindavan's traditions regard Lord Shiva as the first Vaishnav and the guru of all Vaishnavs, because he is a devotee of Lord Vishnu, whose avatar is Lord Krishna.
