History
Gadkalika temple sits in the old Garh area of Ujjain. Tradition says the shrine goes back to the time of the Mahabharata, while the idol of the goddess is believed to be far older still. The temple is said to have been repaired by Emperor Harshavardhana and was later rebuilt by the Scindia rulers of Gwalior. Goddess Kalika is remembered as the deity of the great poet Kalidasa. Navratri is the most important festival here, when the temple stays busy late into the night.
