Recitation of the Durga Saptashati at the Maa Dhumavati Temple in Varanasi, with Ganesh and Guru puja.
The Durga Saptashati Path is recited at the Maa Dhumavati Temple in Varanasi. The temple is dedicated to Maa Dhumavati, one of the ten Mahavidyas. The Saptashati has 700 verses in 13 chapters, taken from the Markandeya Purana, where it is known as Devi Mahatmyam. It tells how Durga overcame demons such as Mahishasura, Shumbha-Nishumbha and Raktabija, a victory of good over evil. It also praises her three forms: Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The path begins with a Sankalp and sandalwood paste to purify body and mind. Ganesha puja is believed to clear obstacles, and Guru puja honours the spiritual guide. Holding water, the devotee states the purpose of the ritual. The Saptashati is placed on a lotus or peepal leaf and all 13 chapters are heard. Flowers, incense and lamps are offered, and hymns praising Durga are sung. While the Durga Gayatri Mantra is chanted, ghee, sesame seeds and herbs can be offered, and the rite closes with homa.
Devotees believe it clears negative energy and builds inner strength and purity. It is said to support spiritual awareness, peace and protection. It is traditionally performed to ask Goddess Durga's help with obstacles. Families seek harmony and emotional balance through it.
