परिचय

Shri Batuk Bhairav Temple in Varanasi is dedicated to Batuk Bhairav, the child form of Kaal Bhairav, who is a fierce form of Lord Shiva. Shri Adi Bhairav Temple, also in Varanasi, is another well-known shrine of the same deity. According to tradition, Bhairav took the form of a child to guard Kashi and defeated the demon Andhakasur. The temple is regarded as especially sacred by Tantric traditions, including the Aghoris, because an Akhand Deep, a lamp said to have burned for centuries, is kept here. Local belief holds that touching the lamp's oil brings great blessings. Within the premises, a dog is honoured as the Lord's attendant. Worship here includes Kaal Bhairav Ashtak, Swarna Akarshan Bhairav Mantra jaap, havan, deepdaan and gauseva. Devotees traditionally take part in these when praying for livelihood, business and prosperity. Regular mantra chanting, weekly pujas and special events on auspicious days are common.
