परिचय

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kashi Vishwanath Temple sits on the western bank of the Ganga in Varanasi. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is tied to Varanasi, among the oldest cities in the world and a major pilgrimage centre. Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore had the present temple rebuilt in 1780. Mahashivaratri and Navratri are the main festivals here. Millions of devotees come in search of blessings and moksha. Tradition holds that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath is equal to visiting every Jyotirlinga in India, and saints such as Guru Nanak, Adi Shankaracharya, Tulsidas and Swami Vivekananda are remembered as having worshipped here. The temple is known for its golden spires and for wall carvings that show Shiva's divine acts. Many pilgrims pour Ganga water and milk over the Shivling, place flowers, and light a diya.

इतिहास

Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore had the temple rebuilt in 1780. Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab gave gold in 1839 to cover two of its domes. The third dome still has no gold plating. A trust under the Uttar Pradesh government has managed the temple since 1983. The Jyotirlinga story tells of a column of light that stretched beyond sky and earth, when the gods argued over who was greatest. Vishnu took the form of a boar to find its base, and Brahma became a swan to find its top. Neither found an end. Vishnu admitted this honestly, but Brahma falsely claimed to have seen the top. Shiva cut off one of Brahma's heads and cursed that Brahma would not be worshipped like other gods, while Vishnu was blessed for his truthfulness. Varanasi is regarded as the place of the first Jyotirlinga. Devotees believe the temple is where Shiva grants moksha and removes ignorance.
